This "trick" is something he has been applying to his photos quite often recently and he is really enjoying the focused attention it provides while at the same time creating a much more dynamic lighting situation. It's often that we receive flat lighting conditions with landscape photography - either on cloudy overcast days or days with full light, but this technique will vastly improve your photos when you get those conditions.
