In this episode of Leveling Up Lighting, photographer Ab Sesay takes you on a journey into the captivating world of fitness photography.

Ab shares his expert knowledgeand insights on how to shoot stunning fitness images, from mastering lighting techniques to ensuring athlete safety and thinking about creative direction.

Ab starts by demystifying the art of lighting. He shows you how to create a simple and versatile lighting setup using just one bare bulb and a large umbrella with a sock. The bare bulb serves as the key light, while the umbrella adds a touch of magic. But here's the twist: both lights play multiple roles. The bare bulb not only functions as the key light, but it can also be used as a rim light to add depth and dimension to the images.

Ab's philosophy of exploration and movement during the shoot is a game-changer. He captures images from every possible angle, ensuring that no remarkable perspective goes unnoticed. By making every light the main light, Ab unveils endless creative possibilities.

When it comes to the technical aspects, Ab emphasizes the importance of fast flash duration. With a T1 above 1/3000th of a second, he freezes motion, allowing for sharp, detailed shots. Selecting the right aperture is also crucial for capturing peak action and maintaining focus. Ab recommends shooting at F8 or above on wider lenses and manually focusing on the subject's anticipated position.

A two-light setup: This is a more complex type of lighting setup, but it can be used to create more dramatic and professional-looking photos.
