How to Shoot Portraits Without Flash Using Continuous Lighting
This part of the second series of ARRI’s continuous lighting is about portrait photography. Portrait photographer Thomas Kierok captures portraits of a dog and the owner and dives into the topic of their character similarities of them. He explains how continuous lighting especially helps him when taking photos of animals.[*]
LIGHTING SETUP ANALYSIS
It is a video that must be seen in detail. You have to remember that to be able to take this type of portrait you need continuous lights with enough power.
We find an atypical 3(+1?) lighting setup, where a BALLOON SOFTBOX is used as the main light and it is located very close to the ground. This, together with the two side lights, placed at 90 and 180 degrees, produces a somewhat different portrait than we are used to. We think that to fill in a bit, they use the fourth light behind the photographer with some diffusers.
Judge for yourself. What do you think of this lighting setup? Do you like it? Do you find it interesting?
