Photographer Brian Bowen Smith's 11,000-mile journey across the country to document Americans during the pandemic

Brian Bowen Smith

A few years ago, Brian Bowen Smith got a treasured gift from a dying man named Bob. It was his 1958 Ford F-100, now affectionately named Pearl. Smith and some friends are now zigzagging across the country, traveling from Los Angeles to New York and back, snapping photos of what America looks like during the pandemic. Having overcome many hurdles, Smith is sure Bob is watching them.

Along the way, he photographed famous faces like Common, Reese Witherspoon and the blended family of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, but also captured the spirit and soul of everyday Americans.

I had the extreme pleasure of visit the DeVoe family farm @wisconsinfarmtours yesterday. It’s a small dairy farm (so they say) in Monroe,Wi. They produce milk for cheese. Dairy farmers are being hit so hard by #covid_19 Although it was one of the most beautiful experience ever. Listening to the stories of how they and others like them are Devastated . Thirty years of farming and loving what they do is being threatened. Up at 4:30 am 7days a week milking 100 heads of cows. The whole family chips in to get it done. Katlyn @katlyn.devoe Yvonne @devoeyvonne Dean @dean.devoe And Riley Adkins @smileyadkins Thank you for what you are doing. My heart goes out to not only your family but families all across the world. Your the main reason why I am doing #bbsdrivebys 🙌🏻🙌🏻. I won’t have a glass of milk or a piece of cheese without thinking of your beautiful family. And I got to hold my first day old baby calf. What a day. #epic Thank you @stonefilmsearth for the introduction. And @sylvain_vincent for being by my side for this whole journey. #dairyfarmers #pearl1958 #m10monochrom

Brian explains his project on Kickstarter.com

Publishing a fine art photography book is no small task but having published 2 books already, I am up to the challenge.

You can see my books here www.bowensmith.com/books

I'm currently working with a great publisher and although we are in the beginning stages of pre-production, during these uncertain times, every effort will be made to have this book completed by December 2020.
