Mario Testino interviews to one of the world's most influential photographers: William Klein

The 89 year-old cult film-maker, one of the world's most influential photographers  William Klein, welcomed Mario to his apartment in Paris, where they spoke on his raw city portraits and the shots of a lifetime.




He is not only a pioneer in the art of street photography. He created some of the most iconic fashion images of the 20th century for Vogue. He is a living legend in the history of photography.

Simone + Nina, Piazza di Spagna, Rome 1960 (Vogue). William Klein wrote in his book Rome + Klein, Contrasto/Aperture 2009. " When I was shown the dresses, it was immediately obvious that the models would cross the Piazza di Spagna on the striped pedestrian passage. They would walk back and forth, see each other and do a double take. To flatten the perspective, I went up on the Piazza steps and used a telephoto lens. The girls walked back and forth until they started to attract attention. I was up on the steps with my camera; nobody saw me. Soon men began to think these girls were crazy hookers and they approched them and tried to feel their asses. The editor from Vogue started to get nervous, afraid there would be, if not a gang rape, at least a traffic jam. The girls continued, the men closed in, the editor panicked completely and signaled wildly to me that we must stop. So we did. She gathered the girls and saved them from a fate worse than death and that was it. A wrap. And maybe one of the best fashion photographs ever." ‘Baseball de rue, New York 1954-55’ « William Klein a saisi ce gosse (comme il dit) en pleine action. Je trouve que cette photographie est pleine de délicatesse, même si ce moment semble banal. J’aime la posture de l’enfant, son regard, ce graffiti illisible et cette grille en arrière plan.
